| Taylor County Jail Stands Empty |

The old Taylor County, W.V., Jail had housed inmates for 77 years. That came to an end last Friday when the county's inmates moved to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail in Randolph County. The jail's opening means big changes for the sheriff's department. Sheriff Robert Beltner has only one deputy on duty at night. If he makes an arrest, that deputy will have to make the journey to Randolph County. Since the jail doesn't have a sprinkler system, it no longer meets fire code. That means it can't be used for storage, let along temporarily holding inmates. County commissioners are looking to see if the state can use the old jail to house state inmates, possibly as an extension of Pruntytown Correctional Center. That would be, of course, after some improvements to the building. |
