Inmate Escapes Hampton Work Detail

A jail inmate escaped from a work detail Wednesday afternoon. It happened in Hampton, Va.where the sheriff's department says it doesn't consider the escapee to be dangerous.
Typically, work detail is considered a reward for good behavior. Most eligible inmates are serving short sentences.
The definition of short could be argued in the case of 23-year old John Devane. He's serving a nine-year jail term for possessing a gun as a convicted felon. Authorities say Devane walked off the work detail around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.
The inmates were working near Briarfield Park. A parks and recreation employee said it appears the inmate ran from the bathroom.
Major James Adams with the sheriff's department defends the decision to have Devane out in the community.
He responded, "These are not violent charges, even though it's possession of a firearm. It's not use of a firearm."
That comes as little comfort to neighbors asking how he could slip away. The sheriff's department says it's by the book to have only one deputy watching a group of inmates. But with an escape, that deputy is in no position to start a chase. The procedure is to secure the other inmates, then call for help with the pursuit.
