They're in jail suspected of breaking the law, but while behind bars, they commit another crime. How does it happen? Inmates are letting their fingers do the walking -- dialing for dollars out of your pocketbook, the Local 2 reported last week. Here's how it works. An inmate calls collect and gets you to dial "7, 2, #" and then a new phone number. It gives the inmate total access to your phone line to dial as many local or long distance calls as the inmate wants. "As long as they have phone access, it's all too easy for them to perpetrate this scam," said Lt. John Martin, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Martin said inmates have access several times a day to nearly 200 phones. Most make collect calls to family, friends or their attorney. But some try to get others to pick up the tab. "They'll pretend that they dialed the wrong number in error, and of course, tell the person that this is the only phone call they get. They give them some kind of sad story like, 'I was arrested on traffic tickets and had my young child with me,'" Martin said. |
