School District wants to hire inmate labor

You've seen them along the highways dressed in orange cleaning up the roadways.
Now a local school district wants to hire inmate labor to save money.
Sunnyside School District officials say there's a lot of work to be done to maintain the schools.  Maintenance workers can barely keep up. Inmate labor is an economical way to get the job done.
Monique Soria, spokeswoman for the district says, "There is not a budget to hire a lot of people at the usual rate, so this saves a lot of money. Safety will always be number one."
The district's proposed plan calls for inmates not to have contact with the children.
Soria says, "The proposal is to have the inmates work at school grounds on Saturday and Sundays, always supervised, and to work in our maintenance areas -- not near the schools during the weekdays."
Parents disagree with the plan. If the school board votes for inmate labor, the district will be responsible for transporting them to and from the Wilmot Prison.
Also, only level-one inmates, the lowest risk with nonviolent backgrounds and non-sexual offenses will be allowed to work.
Other school districts have successfully used inmate labor.
