New greenhouse for inmates

More inmates at the Monroe County, NY, jail will be put to work, thanks to a new greenhouse. The 15,000 square foot facility was opened last Tuesday.

The greenhouse will be run by inmates who are eligible to work outside the jail. It's for those nearing the end of their sentence, to give them skills needed to find a job once they are released.

"Watching something grow from seed can be very therapeutic and it can also change the way they view their own lives.  Knowing that with a little patience and care, they can accomplish anything," says vocational coordinator Carol Lynn Cunniffe.

About 80 inmates currently are eligible for the outside work program.

The jail is also working with local growers to help these inmates find a job once their sentence is completed.
