Worcester County, Mass., authorities plan to transfer 40 inmates to state prison to ease overcrowding at a West Boylston jail. Worcester County Sheriff Guy Glodis obtained a court order to move the inmates, all of whom are awaiting trial. The state Department of Correction had refused to voluntarily accept the inmates. The department is expected to appeal the ruling by District Court Judge John McCann. The Telegram and Gazette of Worcester reports that Glodis initially considered freeing inmates charged with minor crimes. Instead, the sheriff moved to transfer inmates who already have served a state prison sentence for felony convictions. Glodis says the county jail has a population of more than 14-hundred inmates. That's nearly double its normal capacity. A recent fight that led to an inmate's death was blamed in part on overcrowding. |
