Corrections officials in Michigan are looking to put an end to prisoner abuse at women's facilities. While a court battle continues, the exodus is beginning for male corrections officers in Michigan's female prisons. Leo Lalonde, MI Dept. of Corrections spokesperson: "A t Scott, which is the main women's facility, we have so few working in the housing units, we're gonna do it without waiting." Leo Lelonde of the Michigan Department of Corrections says this change has long been overdue. Leo Lalonde: "There were some abuses in the past and we're working to correct them." But not so fast says Mel Grieshaber of the Michigan Corrections Organization. He says a few isolated incidents in the 1990s doesn't warrant an overhaul of corrections policy. Mel Grieshaber, Exec. Dir., MI Corrections Org.: " These were some bad apples that did some bad things several years ago. The department and union have aggressively gone after all these folks and created a situation where it's a safe environment now in the prison." He adds that not only is the change unfair to corrections officers, but each gender offers... Mel Grieshaber: "Certain talents to the situation within a prison setting. Prisoners respond differently, they can handle the situation, usually calming the situation so there's no trouble." But Lalonde says anything that can be done to prevent abuse from recurring in Michigan's prisons will be taken. Leo Lalonde: "Every allegation is 1 too many.We take it very seriously, we investigate 'em all. We look into it, we tell our people if they engage in this type of behavior, they'll be fired." The Michigan corrections officers have taken their case to the US Supreme Court. They're hoping the high court will hear the case by October. |
