MAPLETON, Ore. (AP) An inmate on a work crew died Tuesday when the tree he was cutting fell in the wrong direction, the authorities said. Carlin Samar Wortham, 24, died at the scene. He was part of an eight-man crew clearing trees from underneath power lines near Mapleton. The crew had been dispatched from the Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend. The Oregon Department of Corrections says the death is the first inmate fatality in the prison's 15-year history. Roughly 190 minimum-custody inmates per day are dispatched from the 250-bed prison. Statewide, an average of 850 minimum-custody inmates are assigned to community work crews each day. Wortham was serving time for robbery and burglary convictions out of Lane County. He was on track to being transitioned back to the community in November. If things went well, he would have been released in February, officials said. |
