Officials investigating inmate death

An inmate at the Monroe Detention CenterĀ  in California died early Monday after appearing to suffer a seizure a day after a rough arrest.
West Sacramento resident David James Helmold, 37, died on Monday at 3:18 a.m. after suffering "seizure-like activity" less than an hour earlier, said Yolo County Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash.
A screening conducted after Helmold's death indicated the presence of illegal drugs. However, an autopsy conducted Monday did not determine Helmold's cause of death, and LaBrash said the department is awaiting the results of a toxicology analysis, expected within two weeks.
He said he did not know if arresting officers had observed the suspect acting under the influence of drugs, but it was not one of the charges he was booked under.
Helmold's cellmate summoned officers and Helmold was taken to the booking area for medical treatment and evaluation, the Yolo County Sheriff's Department stated. He struggled with corrections officers and was physically restrained.
A short time later, his condition appeared to deteriorate - LaBrash said he collapsed and became unresponsive - and the jail staff called 9-1-1 and began performing CPR.
He was taken to Woodland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Helmold had been arrested about 26 hours earlier by the West Sacramento Police Department on charges of criminal threats, battery, parole violations and resisting arrest.
Prior to booking at the jail he was evaluated and cleared by both Woodland Memorial Hospital and the detention center's medical staff. LaBrash said Helmold was taken to the hospital prior to booking because his arrest, which involved the use of a canine unit, had not been peaceful. The sheriff's department said the injuries were minor and consistent with safety restraints and superficial dog bites.
