A 23-year-old inmate stabbed a correctional officer Thursday morning inside an Eastern Oregon prison, putting the facility on lockdown, authorities said. The unprovoked attack occurred at 8:15 a.m. inside a housing unit on the east side of Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton, authorities said. Inmate Alan Arthur Watkins stabbed Officer James Hinkle with a metal shank, authorities said. Hinkle was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital, where he was treated and released. He has worked at the 1,600-bed medium-security prison for more than a decade. |
