Inmates Help With Hurricane Relief Efforts

Being behind bars isn't stopping some Clark County inmates from helping in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Earlier this week, Clark County Sheriff's Deputies Brad Barnhart and John Loney came up with the idea of letting inmates make donations to help out the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

The inmates do not carry cash in the jail, but they do have commissary accounts, money that friends and family deposit so they can buy things like toiletries and snacks.

Corey Lanier helped convince his fellow inmates it was the right thing to do.

By Thursday afternoon, the inmates had donated more than $350.

Right now, Sheriff Gene Kelly is challenging his staff to match or exceed the inmate's donation.

All of the money will be given to the American Red Cross.
