The head of the jail system in Shelby County, Tenn., will be the next leader of the state's prisons, Gov. Phil Bredesen announced yesterday.
George M. Little, 50, who most recently has been director of the Shelby County Division of Corrections, will be the state's new correction commissioner. He will be inaugurated next month and will replace Acting Correction Commissioner Gayle Ray.
The state's last permanent correction commissioner, Quenton White, resigned in July.
White, a former federal prosecutor, stepped down amid questions about a sexual harassment allegation against him, his handling of a sexual harassment case against his executive assistant and circumstances surrounding his relationship with a former subordinate.
Little has previously worked for the state Correction Department under Govs. Lamar Alexander and Ned McWherter. He holds a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta.
