| Opinion: Remain Vigilant to Disaster Victims' Physical and Mental Health Needs |

As we watch in horror the suffering in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, the frustration and impatience we all feel is understandable. However, it is unfortunate that too many individuals have used the lack of progress as an opportunity to pit the needs of South Asian residents victimized by last December's tsunami against those of the American citizens devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The Head of New Orleans' emergency operations complained that the United States could “send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims, but we can't bail out the city of New Orleans.” His anger is understandable, but his aggravation is misdirected. Early this year, both the U.S. government and private citizens rightfully responded with generosity to the victims of the December tsunami. But the extent of devastation and trauma was so massive and the recovery so slow, that, to this day, thousands still live in tents without sufficient food and sanitation. Too often, we respond with concern and kindness when the cameras are focused on human tragedy, but soon forget the need and turn our eyes to the next crisis that occurs. The pain and trauma of the tsunami remains with those children and adults in Southeast Asia, and the mental health impact will be felt for decades. A team from the New Jersey Mental Health Institute recently returned from providing mental health training to volunteers serving the thousands affected by the tsunami and the evidence of lingering trauma is widespread. We know from that experience, as well as many previous tragedies, the mental health impact of the unimaginable loss suffered by Hurricane Katrina's victims will last long after buildings are replaced and wounds have healed. Not only must the citizens of the United States rally to provide water, food, shelter and medical care to the residents of the Gulf region, but we must also provide emotional comfort and mental health services and support. Professionals from New Jersey's mental health care provider network have volunteered to travel to the affected region to provide mental health services to trauma victims. But the long-term pain of a parent who loses a child in such a tragedy is no more-- or less-- if it occurs on American soil or elsewhere. As we rush to the aid of individuals in the Gulf Region, we must not put aside our compassionate assistance to suffering elsewhere in the world. Other nations are much less equipped to meet the enormous needs of a traumatized people, with an infrastructure far behind ours. Right now, we can and must alleviate the heart-wrenching suffering of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. And we must remain vigilant to remember and respond to their lasting physical and mental health needs, as well as those in other parts of the world, long after the cameras have focused on the next disaster.
