Two inmates made up their beds to look like they were still sleeping before escaping through the ceiling of the Porter County, Ind., Jail, officials said. The escape, which was first noticed Tuesday morning, was the first at the three-year-old jail. James Pridmore, 36, and Delbert Tompkins, 30, were apprehended a few hours later about 15 miles away in the Lake County city of Lake Station. Sheriff Dave Reynolds said the two men climbed into the ceiling and forced open a part of the roof to make their escape. The escape was not a problem with manpower or policy at the jail, he said. ''It's more of an architectural flaw,'' he said. Both men face felony charges of escape. Tompkins, who was being held on federal firearm violations, also faces federal escape charges. Pridmore was serving time at the jail for an armed robbery conviction. Before fleeing, the pair made it look like their beds were occupied, Sgt. Tim Emmons said. The jail's lights are dimmed during the evening bed check. |
