Wisc. Corrections Secretary Matt Frank announced a new management structure Thursday to better serve women inmates. Under the reorganization, Taycheedah Correctional Institution Warden Ana Boatwright now also oversees the management of the state's three other facilities for female inmates. Previously, there was no separate management structure for the institutions for women. Frank said the change will allow the department to focus on problems unique to female inmates, many of whom left children behind when they were incarcerated. Women in prison also appear to have a higher incidence of mental health disorders than male inmates, he said. The reorganization, which is not expected to add costs, took effect Aug. 21, he said. The state holds about 1,250 women, compared with about 20,400 men. Many of those women have been victims of crime or involved in abusive relationships. Under the new management structure, issues specific to women can more easily be addressed, he said. In December, the department started doing intake for all female prisoners at Taycheedah in Fond du Lac. Before that, women had been admitted to the prison system along with men at Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun. Under the new system, Boatwright will oversee the Milwaukee Women's Correctional Center, the John Burke Correctional Center in Waupun and the Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center in Union Grove in addition to Taycheedah. |
