The big winners at one gardening competition don't have to worry about thieves stealing the veggies. The okra, carrots and field pumpkins were grown behind barbed wire, at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Vt. The inmate gardeners are winners of a number of top honors and second-place prizes at the Champlain Valley Fair. They have plenty of time to tend their crops. The prisoners work 12 to 14 hours a day in their three and a-half acre garden. Inmate Andrew Wood, who is serving 20-to-life for second-degree murder, said the veggies they grow are much better than anything you can buy in a supermarket. He added the inmates take great pride in their garden. |
