Escambia County, Fla., authorities have arrested a man who allegedly escaped from a Mississippi jail in an area heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Deputies say they arrested 24-year-old Curtis Dixon after he asked for food at a Molino shelter for evacuees. Deputies say Dixon and two other inmates escaped September fifth through an air vent in a Marion County, Mississippi, jail. A manager at the American Red Cross shelter in Molino says Dixon was turned away Tuesday because he said he lived in Pensacola. She says Dixon returned Friday and tried to get food, but was again rebuffed when he showed a Florida ID. A spokesman for the Escambia County Sheriff's Office says the name on the ID matched one of Dixon's aliases. Dixon was wanted on two murder charges in Mississippi and in New Orleans on charges of aggravated kidnapping, carjacking and attempted murder. He's being held without bond in the Escambia County Jail. |
