A Pottsville, Pennsylvania man has received a stay of execution just one week before he was to be put to death. After being convicted of the 1993 murders of both his grandmother and uncle, Daniel M. Saranchak's execution is now under the scrutiny of U.S. Middle District Judge Sylvia H. Rambo. Reports state that Judge Rambo did not believe Saranchak had received adequate representation during his trial. Saranchak's lawyers and the Defender of Association of Philadelphia will now file paperwork to support the claim that Saranchak's lawyer Kent D. Williams was not representing Saranchak's case properly. However, Saranchak had confessed to the slayings, admitting that he shot both his grandmother and his uncle while they slept. Saranchak has been filing appeals since 2000, shortly after he was sentenced to death. He is currently an inmate at SCI/Graterford in Montgomery County. |
