Prisoners Pitch In for Relief
By Associated Press
Published: 09/19/2005

Prisoners from Alabama's Montgomery Kilby correctional facility have been doing their part to help Hurricane Katrina victims, raising $1,112.37 for the Red Cross. Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett reports that inmates statewide have raised an estimated $5,000.

The relief effort started within a faith-based section of Kilby prison, but quickly spread throughout the facility. Corrections officials say that they only helped by hanging posters for the cause, maintaining that the inmates fueled the fundraising – on their own.

Inmates reached into their own pockets to help victims, donating anywhere from 7 cents to $100. Prison officials were happy to see efforts being made to help hurricane victims, saying that the donations were something inmates “did all on their own.”
