Utah Sex Offenders Not In Compliance
By Associated Press
Published: 09/19/2005

Utah corrections officials believe as many as 1,900 sex offenders are not in compliance with state law. Although state law requires sex offenders to notify the corrections department whenever they have a change of address, it appears that many do not. Officials find the situation frustrating, saying that the state is expecting too much from dishonest offenders who are usually quite secretive about their behavior to begin with.

Officials also say that the state sent letters to sex offenders last year, asking them to verify or update their address information. Roughly 700 of those letters were returned as undeliverable.

The state also says it has limited resources to track down these bad-address offenders, many of whom risk a mandatory 90-day jail sentence for these types of violations. It's estimated that prosecuting these violators would cost the state an extra $4 million dollars per year, and require the state to hire another 60 people
