Forty prisoners were transferred from the high-security protective custody unit at MCI-Concord in Massachusetts to Old Colony Correctional Center early last week. Officials say that this move will improve safety conditions for the prisoners, and allow them to live in a “more secure setting”. The Massachusetts Department of Corrections believes that moving the prisoners will allow them to participate in more programs once they feel safe. In August 2003, a prisoner killed inmate John Geoghan, a minister that was serving a 10-year sentence for molestation. Following the murder, The Geoghan Review was formed to help protect prisoners while they are incarcerated. The Geoghan Review Panel recommended moving the prisoners so that they would be secure and less likely to become victims of inmate violence. “In keeping with the recommendations made by these commissions, I have decided to relocate the MCI-Concord SHU to Old Colony Correctional Center,” said Kathleen Dennehy, the Correction Commissioner. Officials also hope that moving the prisoners to a safer setting will help them participate in classes and jobs. |
