Pima County, Az., jail officials ordered a mass drug testing last month of more than 200 minimum-security inmates and authorities said 20% tested positive. All of the inmates at the minimum-security jail were tested. The facility holds all inmates serving jail sentences, as well as inmates on work release. "Anytime you have a program where inmates are only in custody part of the time and out in the community with jobs or school the rest of the time, you're going to have that kind of problem," said Capt. Judy Hendrickson, who heads security operations for the county Sheriff's Department's corrections bureau. Many inmates tested positive for cocaine, according to Hendrickson. The test results were forwarded to probation officers in some cases. Some inmates were moved into more secure units at the main jail nearby. While inmates had been tested on a random basis before, jail officials will now require more testing, as will probation officers with defendants in the jail. |
