A 20-member committee has been appointed to serve as a liaison between the Wyoming Department of Corrections and Goshen County communities regarding construction and operation of a new medium-security prison. The Prison Community Partnership Committee, chaired by businessman Gary Olson, met for the first time last week. "We wanted a good cross-representation of the community to be involved in the dialogue of this effort," Department of Corrections Director Bob Lampert said. "We want to make sure if there are any issues with the life of the facility to communicate that and let us know what the issues are. Being partners with the prison is for the benefit of the community." "You are the pioneers of this whole effort," he told the committee. An orientation will be held next spring for the committee members, and they will travel to the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins for a tour. The committee will meet quarterly the second Wednesday of the month, beginning in January. While Lampert said the group is not governed by the state's open meetings law, he wants the meetings to be open. "There might be times an executive session has to be called, but the members of the public are welcome at all meetings of the PCPC, and all meetings will be advertised," he said. A groundbreaking ceremony for the $83 million, 650-bed prison is set for Sept. 29 at the Eastern Wyoming College Auditorium at 10 a.m. Gov. Dave Freudenthal will speak, along with local leaders and Lampert. Buses will then take selected dignitaries and media to the actual prison site for the "digging dirt" ceremony. |
