7 inmates escape, leaving jail garb behind

About 50 deputies searched Tuesday for seven inmates who escaped from the Sullivan County jail in Blountville, Tenn. dressed only in their underwear.
An eighth inmate who was part of the predawn jail break was quickly recaptured, Sheriff Wayne Anderson said.
The men escaped by using a plumbing access in a wall and then an air duct to get to the roof of the jail.
"They tied their uniforms together and went over the roof," Anderson said.
He said that while the inmates had carefully worked out their route from the jail, they apparently didn't plan for what do once outside in 30-degree weather.
The men were being held on charges that ranged from attempted murder to drunken driving.
Anderson said it wasn't known whether the fugitives were armed but they should be considered dangerous.
The inmates fled from a section of the jail built in 2000.
The jail, about 100 miles northeast of Knoxville, holds suspects who are awaiting trial and inmates convicted of state crimes.
