Four men escape from Hoke County Jail

Four inmates escaped from the Hoke County jail in Raeford, N.C. using blankets to drop about six feet from a window, Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said.
Peterkin said the inmates escaped around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Deputies and dogs searched but had not found the men as of early Wednesday, he said.
The inmates took advantage of a lack of officers, the sheriff's office said.
He said the inmates were in the jail's annex, which is supposed to house about 40 inmates. Peterkin said it was usually stuffed way over capacity.
The sheriff said the jail as a whole is supposed to hold only 71 people, "but it usually holds more like 90, 93."
Across from the annex sits a booth with a window where a jailer is supposed to sit. No one was in it at the time of the escape.
Peterkin, who has been sheriff since December, said a state inspector visited the jail Sept. 16 and threatened to close the annex if security was not increased.
Two days later, Peterkin said, he went before the Hoke County Commissioners with a memo asking for more jailers. He had already asked for extra personnel in his July budget request, but said he was denied.
Peterkin said he sent memos to Hoke County Commissioners on Sept. 18 and Oct. 6 asking for more personnel, but never received a response.
Tuesday night, only three jailers were on duty.
Commissioners could not immediately be reached for comment late Tuesday.
"I hate to be the one to say it but I told them. I warned them," Peterkin said.
