Corrections officials in Louisiana received word earlier today that another round of inmate evacuations are necessary as the Gulf Coast prepares for landfall of Hurricane Rita. Already with Category 5 status, reports suggest that Hurricane Rita could be even more devastating than Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed New Orleans and the surrounding areas three and a half weeks ago. According to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, corrections officials will immediately begin moving 1,400 inmates from Calcasieu Parish, Cameron Parish, St. Iberia Parish Work Release and Lake Charleswork Release into state and local facilities. Another 160 inmates will also be moved out of Phelps Correctional Center to other state and local facilities. |
