14-Hour Thailand Prison Riot Ends
By Associated Press
Published: 09/26/2005

After 14 hours of rioting, officers at Lopburi Central Prison, in Thailand, have restored order to the facility. Officials report that hundreds of convicts angrily burned down buildings - citing a lack of water and a ban on a kickboxing television program.

Prisoners surrendered at 9 a.m. on Sunday, after the Department of Corrections agreed to make water available, restore kickboxing-viewing privileges, and to transfer the prison warden. Kickboxing programs had been banned due to many prisoners betting on the matches.

Officials said the riot started on Saturday and, by nightfall, prisoners had started to burn down cellblocks and prison workshop centers. Two prisoners were hurt; officials say they had been cut by broken glass during the riot.

Prison warden Udom Ratanapokin claimed that prison gamblers had planned the riot because the ban on kickboxing had hurt their business.
