One Abbeville County, S.C. Sheriff's Deputy and three Abbeville County Corrections Officers were indicted by a grand jury Monday on charges they had inappropriate relations with female inmates while on duty at the Abbeville County Detention Center.
The four are each charged with one count of the misdemeanor misconduct in office.
According South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, the indictments say each detention center officer "did engage in indecent liberties and familiarities with inmates" while on the job between August, 2002, and July, 2003. A spokesman for the attorney general says sex was traded for small favors such as cigarettes.
Abbeville Sheriff Charles Goodwin says the men have been suspended without pay.
Arraignment and bond hearings for the four defendants has not yet been scheduled. The charge of misconduct in office carries a sentence of up to ten years in prison.
