The FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the Florida Department of Corrections, but officials are mum on whether it includes the recent resignation of a high-ranking prison official and the ongoing probe into the use of steroids by corrections officers. FBI spokesman Bill Hurlburt confirmed there was an ongoing investigation into the state prison system but declined further comment. FDLE spokeswoman Kristen Perezluha also declined comment. Allen Clark, 40, a protege and friend of Department of Corrections Secretary James Crosby, appears to be at the center of the probe, but officials would not confirm whether he was under investigation. In a letter to Crosby dated Aug. 30, Clark announced his resignation as a regional director overseeing 18 major prisons in the Panhandle from Jefferson County to the Alabama line. The letter gave no reason. Crosby accepted his resignation and had no comment on the investigation, said Robby Cunningham, a department spokesman. Officials are investigating Clark's ties to former corrections officers arrested for importing steroids for other officers as well as allegations that some prison officials pocketed recycling money and misused money in an employee fund, according to a report published Thursday by the St. Petersburg Times. Al Solomon, warden of Apalachee Correctional Institution, has been named interim regional director. Clark was disciplined several times in his career, including a 60-day suspension for using inappropriate force to quell an inmate disturbance in 1994. After Crosby was appointed secretary by Bush in 2003, Clark was made warden of New River. In June 2004, Crosby named Clark regional director. |
