Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt signed an executive order last Wednesday making permanent an effort by various state agencies to work together to help people leaving prison re-enter society. Blunt said a coordinated effort is important to help these people get back on their feet and to ensure the safety of people in the community where they live. According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, 97 percent of inmates are eventually released. The current rate of those who return to prison, for either a parole violation or a new crime, is about 39 percent. Corrections Department spokesman John Fougere said the new effort helps ensure that offenders have no gap in services such as drug abuse or mental health treatment or job training once they leave prison. Previously, an inmate would get services in prison, but then leave, and a parole officer would have to start from scratch in lining up community services to provide care. Now, such assistance is planned before the inmate's sentence ends. |
