About 240 Nevada prison inmates trained in fighting wildfires left yesterday for the fire line in Southern California. The prison crews were accompanied by 80 prison officers and state Division of Forestry supervisors, as well as two National Guard helicopters. Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn said the inmate crews "have become an integral part of Nevada for fighting fires." Guinn also said he told California Gov. Gray Davis "we would do everything possible" to help. The inmate crews follow Nevada's deployment of 167 firefighters, 34 fire engines, three helicopters and a transport plane since Davis asked for help Monday. |
