Okwara Uche Kalu, Acting Controller-General of Nigeria Prisons Service, reported that there had been three deaths as a result of a prison riot last week. Kalu had returned from assessing the damage at Ikoyi prisons, saying that inmates had rioted using a range of weapons ranging from machetes and swords to chisels. Kalu said that while the inmates did not have any guns, most of their weapons had been stolen from prison carpentry workshops. Inmates also set fire to an administrative area of the prison, which destroyed some documents. Prisoners also vandalized the carpentry, welfare and tailoring offices, as well as the Chief Warden's office. Reportedly, three inmates died while rioting; one inmate fell off of the roof while trying to start a fire, while two other inmates died trying to jump the prison fences. |
