The last of eight inmates who escaped from jail by crawling through an air duct to a roof and then tying their uniforms into a ladder was captured Saturday in a barn about 30 miles away. U.S. Marshals apprehended George Simpson, 27, after he was spotted hiding in a barn near Big Stone Gap, Va., said Sullivan County, Tenn., Sheriff Wayne Anderson. The other seven escapees from the Sullivan County Jail were already in custody. The jail, about 100 miles northeast of Knoxville, holds suspects who are awaiting trial and inmates convicted of state crimes. The men who escaped were being held on charges that ranged from drunken driving to attempted murder. The group escaped early Monday by climbing through a plumbing access in a wall and then through an air duct to the roof. They tied their jail uniforms together to reach the ground, where they stole a pickup truck and drove it through a fence to get away, authorities said. Anderson said the inmates apparently didn't consider what they would do once outside in the 30-degree weather without their uniforms. Some were spotted across town in their underwear, he said. One of the inmates was quickly captured, and the others were found during the week. Felony escape is punishable by one to six years in prison. Simpson, of Terre Haute, Ind., remained in federal custody Saturday. The other escapees were Brian Keith Morrell, Donald Joiner, Jeff Begley, Josh Mosley, Joseph Samples, Rodney Gilbert and James Reynolds. |
