Mistaken Identity
By KWCH Eyewitness News

A Kansas inmate was mistakenly released from the Sedgwick County Jail on Monday after a paperwork mix-up, according to officials.

Captain Barbra Maxwell said the mix-up started because two inmate mug shots were switched in the prisoner records. Officials reportedly went to the cell of the inmate that was supposed to be set free – but when they call his name, his cellmate Troy Bauer, 33, responded. Due to the mix-up in mug shots, officials thought they had the right inmate.

However, corrections officers add that Bauer had to answer a series of questions before his release, including his social security number and birthday – and Bauer answered all of those questions correctly. About an hour after his release, authorities realized what had happened. While Maxwell adds that Bauer doesn't pose a threat to the community, officials are investigating whether or not the two cellmates had planned the mix-up.

Bauer had been serving time for burglary charges.
