Twenty-six juveniles rioted for seven hours on Wednesday evening, after refusing to return to their cells in the Hindley Youth Offenders Institution. Officials reported that the juveniles went on a rampage, setting fire to sells, throwing missiles and causing a flood, starting at about 7:30 p.m. The UK Prison Service confirmed that the juveniles had smashed sinks off of the walls, starting floods and causing substantial damage. The juveniles also reportedly started fires before barricading themselves inside a wing of the facility. Negotiators were sent into the facility, and ended the stand-off at 2:15 a.m. While no prison officials were hurt, a number of juveniles suffered minor injuries which were reportedly self-inflicted. A number of juveniles had to be relocated following the riot, due to water seeping into the electrical system of the facility. |
