Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen swore in new state correction commissioner George Little last week at the state capitol building, less then a month after Little's appointment. The governor said Little's previous experience in the Department of Corrections and in Shelby County, where he oversaw the county's correctional system for more than two years, means Little should be able to "hit the ground running." "The consequences of decisions don't just affect spreadsheets," Bredesen said. "They affect, in fundamental ways, the lives of people and they often mean the difference between life and death." Little “has proven himself capable of making the tough choices," Bredesen said. Little's mother stood with him at the podium as he swore to uphold his duties. "I think about the tremendous responsibility that I have in providing leadership to the team in the department of corrections," Little said afterward. "I just hope that I can be worthy of all the kindness and all the support." The Department of Corrections currently operates 15 prisons and more than 18,000 prisoners. |
