Inmates to Train Dogs
By Associated Press
Published: 10/10/2005

Some New Hampshire prison inmates will soon become dog trainers. The Department of Corrections says 20 male inmates will be chosen to train dogs for people with vision and hearing problems. They will also train dogs to help people with balance problems and those who suffer from seizures.
The dogs will stay with their trainers and sleep in their cells, says Corrections spokesman Jeff Lyons. A community group, Pathways to Hope, will provide the dogs, instructors, and other services and supplies. Similar training programs already operate in other states, including Massachusetts and Maine.
