A New York inmate is accused of stabbing three corrections officers following an altercation in the Elmira Correctional Facility. Authorities say that an officer came upon Anthony Rivera, 35, sobbing in the facility. When the officer tried to move Rivera into a sergeant's office to interview him, Rivera ran away. During the altercation, the sergeant was stabbed in the arm and chest as he tried to stop Rivera in a stairwell. Two other officers suffered minor wounds when Rivera stabbed them as well. According to reports, the weapon was a 4- to 5-inch shank. The officers and the sergeant are being treated at Arnot Ogeden Medical Center. Rivera was serving a sentence for a parole violation on a third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance conviction. He has been moved to a special housing unit and faces additional charges. |
