King County Guard Sentenced in Rape

A corrections officer described as "Mr. Straight" by his lawyer has been sentenced to more than 64 years in prison for kidnapping, beating and raping two women who still bear visible scars two years later.
Floyd Wayne Drane, 53, who worked as a guard for 22 years, most recently at the King County Regional Justice Center, was convincing when he said he didn't remember most of the episodes in which he was accused, Superior Court Judge Rosanne N. Buckner said.
Nonetheless, Buckner said in court Friday, "it's very clear to me that this was a case of rape, torture and kidnapping — and your victims will (remember)."
Drane, convicted earlier by Buckner in a nonjury trial, was sentenced to 64 years and four months in prison for two counts each of first-degree rape, kidnapping and assault and one count of first-degree robbery.
His Army service in Vietnam, which he received the Purple Heart, and contributions as a hardworking member of the community "does not make up for the very serious nature of the crime you committed," the judge said.
Defense lawyer John Henry Browne said he had known Drane for 15 years through his work in the courts and asked that he be sentenced to a low-end term of 51 years. "It's a dilemma to figure out what really happened," Browne said outside the court. "He was Mr. Straight. Its very confusing."
Prosecutors said Drane was angry about a divorce case and work problems and was high on crack cocaine when he abducted two prostitutes, one in September 2003 and the other a month later, taking them to his home in Tacoma and beating and raping them.
One, now 21, said she had to undergo surgery after Drane burned her with a clothes iron that left scars on her legs, arm and torso and beat her with an electrical cord.
The other, 47, said Drane held her against her will for three days, threatening, choking, beating and shooting her 17 times with a BB gun as she lay bound on his laundry room floor.
