Death Row Inmates Protest; Transferred

Three death row inmates in Ohio are being moved to a new prison, despite their protests against the transfer. According to officials, the three inmates have been cutting themselves in protest, causing two of the inmates to require medical attention and stitches. Andrea Dean, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says that the inmates were given final notice of the transfer last week.

Yesterday, officers began to transfer all of the death row inmates, taking 31 of the 194 inmates from the Mansfield Correctional Institution to the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown.

Officials say they are investigating the self-inflicted injuries, but have reason to believe they are in protest of the transfer. Dean noted that while self-inflicted wounds are relatively common, the injuries would not prevent the transfer.

The inmate transfer was approved by the state to save money. Although the American Civil Liberties Union protested the transfer, and filed suit against the state, a federal judge rejected the lawsuit earlier this month. Dean noted that some inmates are upset because they will not have smoking privileges in the new facility and might be further away from family members.
