Don Williams, a Leon County detention officer, was fired yesterday, while the head administrator of the detention center, Linda Edwards-Ellis, was suspended with pay following angry questions from lawmakers about the rape of a juvenile in their custody. Allegedly a mentally challenged juvenile was raped by another inmate in charge of cleaning and diapering the victim. According to news reports, a juvenile who was convicted of sexual assault was assigned to taking care of the 16 year-old mentally challenged inmate, who could barely speak. The House Justice Appropriations Committee investigated the incidents but insisted that the department could not fire or suspend anyone until their internal investigation was completed. According to reports, a supervisor at the detention center had sent an e-mail about the situation to the superintendent of the facility, and received an e-mail back that said “we have bigger things to worry about right now.” |
