The city of Jacksonville Texas, as part of its “Beautify Jacksonville” project, is getting even more help from an unlikely source. Inmates from Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Hodge Unit in Rusk will be cleaning various cemeteries and parks in and around Jacksonville. “It's wonderful,” said Wade Davis, parks and recreation director for the city, “The only cost to us is transportation and lunch.” Davis said that is a benefit to this partnership. “On the beneficial side, it saves tax money by getting offender labor,” he said. The inmates will be used to help clean other areas of Jacksonville. “They started last week and will be working for approximately three weeks,” Davis said. “They're also going to Buckner Park, Lincoln Park, and also over tp Brookside, to clean drainage ditches.” The program has been in effect for about seven years, Davis said. Davis said he is appreciative to Rusk officials for making this possible. “I want to give thanks to Warden Todd Foxworth and the unit,” Davis said. Last spring, inmates from the unit cleaned areas at Lake Jacksonville and have completed other improvement projects such as replacing railroad ties at the Texas State Railroad between Rusk and Palestine and refurbishing the church on the TSRR State Park site, officials said. |
