New Zealand's Mount Eden Prison is being accused of storing excess inmates in police vans which are parked on public streets. According to Corrections Association President Beven Hanlon, managers at the prison began storing dozens of inmates in the vans on Friday, as a way to address overcrowding issues. According to Hanlon, officers were ordered to fill two police vans with inmates during lockdown times so the prison would not exceed capacity. Officials at the prison were concerned about keeping inmates in the vans, saying that they were not sure what to do if something went wrong. The officers' union says that prison managers are "playing musical inmates". |
