Inmate May Be Force-fed
By The Bangor Daily News

Maine officials will most likely seek a court order this week to force-feed an inmate that has been on hunger strike for two weeks. According to reports, the Penobscot County Jail inmate is refusing to eat because he wants to be relocated to another prison.

While authorities have not released the name of the inmate, others identified the offender as James Emerson, 23. Emerson is being held at the facility while he awaits trial for burglary and theft charges. Officials report that although other inmates have gone on hunger strikes the facility, Emerson's strike has gone on longer than most, prompting the jail to take action.

Authorities added that they have offered Emerson food daily, and have also attempted to hospitalize him. However, doctors have concluded that Emerson is mentally and medically sound, and that he has no apparent medical problems from the lack of food. Officials say that at the first sign of medical problems, they will seek the court order, reportedly before the weekend.
