Published: 10/28/2005

An inmate died in a Virginia jail last week, according to recently released reports from the Arlington County Detention Facility. Officials believe that the inmate died due to “suspicious activity” and an investigation is currently underway.

Officers would not release the name of the inmate, who died three days before his scheduled release. According to Sheriff's Chief Deputy Dennis Webb, the inmate was found unconscious on the floor of his cell when officers arrived to serve him lunch. Shortly before lunch, the inmate was seen in a recreation room in the jail. Authorities did not report hearing any disturbance or struggle.

The inmate was immediately transported to the Virginia Hospital Center, where attempts to resuscitate him failed. The inmate had been serving an 18 month sentence for making phone threats and contempt of court charges. Autopsy results are not yet available, but officials will continue to investigate the death.
