Over 100 Inmates Protest
By NBC News 4
Published: 10/31/2005

Over 100 Maryland inmates protested for 30-hours last week at Roxbury Correctional Institution, refusing to return food trays and blocking their cell doors so correctional officers could not see inside. The inmates were protesting living conditions and certain personal items being banned, according to recently released reports.

The protest began on Wednesday last week, at about 5 a.m. Officers eventually had to force cell doors open, and inmates stopped resisting. Inmates met with prison officials following the protest, and officers agreed to look into their complaints.

While 130 of the inmates in the facility protested, the rest of the prison – another 1,800 inmates – did not participate in the protest.
