Stephens escaped when a part of the detention center flooded. After requesting a mop and bucket from an officer to clean up his cell, Stephens and his cellmate attacked the officer and took his keys. After locking the officer in the cell, Stephens released an inmate from another cell and climbed a fence surrounding the prison. Stephens escaped, but the other inmate fell and broke his leg. Officials captured him and put him back into custody. According to reports, Stephens was being held for her murder despite his claim that he went for a walk and returned home to find Singleton shot. Singleton had been shot once, in the face with a handgun. Officers found a handgun near the residence. Singleton went into a coma after the shooting, and died eight days later. Charges against Stephens were upgraded to murder, rather than assault, following Singleton's death. Officers are still searching for Stephens. |
