| Prison Officers to Get Drug Tests |

Before the end of the year, Florida's prison system plans to start randomly drug testing its officers, including testing for use of steroids. Steroid use among at least a handful of now former Department of Corrections officers was confirmed earlier this year with federal convictions in connection with a ring that moved steroids from Egypt to North Florida. Others are awaiting trial or sentencing in the case. Steroid abuse is one of several problems facing department Secretary James V. Crosby this fall. His agency is also under scrutiny for hiring and promotion practices, financial irregularities and illegal use of inmate labor. Crosby said the random drug testing -- including testing for steroids -- is not a response to the recent controversy. A departmental e-mail trail appears to substantiate his claim. |
