Willie Freddy Franklin, a former corrections officer, was convicted of smuggling drugs into Lancaster County Prison. After working at the prison for three months, Franklin began to smuggle packets of heroin, cigarettes and lighters into the facility. Franklin sold the contraband items to inmates. Officers at the facility searched Franklin's person and possessions after receiving a tip from an inmate. Upon searching Franklin, officials discovered packets of heroin in bundles. The heroin packets were packaged for sale, and stamped with eagle imprints. Franklin was immediately arrested, and confessed to selling drugs in the prison. Later, Franklin changed his story, claiming that someone in the facility gave him court papers and the heroin was mixed in with the documents. The jury took only 20 minutes to convict Franklin of drug smuggling. He now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years. Franklin faced additional charges because the prison was non-smoking and the cigarettes and lighters are considered contraband. |
