About 300 officers from three state agencies swarmed Tennessee's largest prison last week in a search for drugs, cell phones and other banned items amid fears inmates may be running drug rings with the help of employees. Correction Department spokeswoman Amanda Sluss said officers used drug-sniffing dogs and electronic detection devices to search 2,500 inmates and 800 employees at West Tennessee State Penitentiary, about 45 miles northeast of Memphis. The results of the sweep were not disclosed. In April, the state's former corrections commissioner warned lawmakers that prison employees were probably helping inmates run drug rings from their cells. Cell phones were of particular concern because officials fear inmates use them to avoid routine monitoring of their calls. |
